ABOUT ASVS
The Advanced School of Volunteer Service (ASVS) offers a Certificate in Volunteer Service (CVS), an advanced training program for volunteers provided by the Faculty of Philosophy and Theology, in partnership with the Mission Institute of the Middle East and North Africa Union (MENAU) and the Adventist Volunteer Service (AVS). This program prepares individuals for a significant impact in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region and globally within the Seventh-day Adventist Church, emphasizing cultural sensitivity, effective communication, and leadership in transcultural contexts. ASVS offers a comprehensive approach, developing leaders equipped to promote social well-being and serve others, inspired by the example of Jesus.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The ASVS aims to provide its participants with:
- Cultural Proficiency: Developing a deep understanding of cultural dynamics, values, and practices to foster effective engagement in transcultural environments.
- Leadership Development: Training to lead and guide teams in different cultural contexts with compassion and competence.
- Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Preparing to handle challenges and ethical dilemmas encountered in intercultural service.
- Holistic Service: Integrating emotional intelligence, spiritual care, and practical tools to serve communities with respect and understanding.
TARGET AUDIENCE
- Young people from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) who want to enhance their understanding of voluntary service and contribute to their local communities through specialized training.
- Individuals from various professional and academic backgrounds, outside this region, committed to the Adventist Volunteer Service, seeking specialized training to engage in work in MENA and beyond, bringing their unique perspectives and skills.
CURRICULUM STRUCTURE
The ASVS offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines theory and practice, preparing students for global and transcultural ministry:
- Interdisciplinary Curriculum: The program integrates theology, anthropology, sociology, language studies, and leadership training.
- Practical Experience: Internships and fieldwork in diverse cultural environments allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
- Global Perspective: The curriculum is designed for those who wish to engage in international missions, humanitarian aid, or roles in multicultural organizations.
- Hybrid Format: The program combines online and in-person modules, with experts from around the world sharing their knowledge in world religions and missions.
CERTIFICATE COMPONENTS
The Certificate in Volunteer Service from ASVS provides a comprehensive approach to missionary service and volunteer work:
- Intercultural Understanding: Students will learn about cultural sensitivity, communication strategies, and the importance of understanding local customs and traditions when working in different cultural settings.
- Service-Learning Projects: The program includes practical learning opportunities, allowing students to apply their knowledge in volunteer projects in collaboration with local communities and organizations.
- Global Issues and Development: Participants explore global issues such as poverty, health, education, and sustainability, understanding the role of volunteer service in addressing these challenges.
- Ethical Volunteering: The program emphasizes biblical principles of ethical volunteering, focusing on respect for local communities, avoiding harm, and ensuring sustainable and beneficial volunteer efforts.
- Personal and Spiritual Development: Students focus on their personal and spiritual growth, strengthening their commitment to serve God with purpose and dedication.
- Networking and Professional Growth: The program offers networking opportunities with other volunteers, organizations, and professionals, expanding their prospects within the Seventh-day Adventist Church worldwide.
WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE
Throughout the six-month program, you will have the opportunity to:
- English Classes and Weekly Training: Focus on improving your language skills and developing effective transcultural practices.
- Participation in Local Impact Projects: Contribute your energy and skills to community service projects.
- Cultural Visits and Immersive Experiences: Activities in Lebanon and other locations will provide a deep cultural immersion, expanding your understanding of the local social and cultural reality.
APPLICATION PROCESS
During the candidate selection process, the sending organization must ensure the following basic requirements are met:
- English Proficiency: Candidates must demonstrate English proficiency, with preference for those who have at least an intermediate level (Duolingo DET score 80 for intermediate and 100 for advanced entry).
- University Degree: A completed or partially completed university degree is required to ensure that candidates have the necessary academic background for the program. However, candidates who do not meet this requirement but have professional skills needed for the mission may also apply.
- Commitment to Service Post-Graduation: Candidates must commit to serving for a minimum of one year after graduating from the ASTS, demonstrating the willingness and ability to provide stability and continuity in their mission work.
- Single Status: Preference may be given to single candidates, according to the mission’s specific requirements.
- Completion of Basic Mission Training (e.g., “Send Me”, book Passport to Mission): Candidates must have successfully completed a basic mission training and submit the certificate to demonstrate their readiness for the advanced level of training and mission service.
- Submission of a CV: A CV must be submitted, highlighting the candidate’s qualifications, experiences, and suitability for the mission.
