MEU Faculty Share Research at Andrews University Business Professors Conference

A delegation from Middle East University presents papers on blockchain, AI, banking ethics, and public sector digitalization at the 13th Biennial Business Professors Conference at Andrews University, USA.

Middle East University (MEU) was represented at the 13th Biennial SDA Business Professors Conference, hosted by Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, from June 30 to July 1, 2025. The meeting was part of a broader program held from June 29 to July 3 under the theme “Adapting to a Changing World: Challenges for Small Businesses,” which examines technological innovation, governance, and sustainable growth for small businesses.

The MEU delegation includes Dr. Philippe Zgheib, Dean of the College of Business Administration; Professors Bassam Abdalla, Andrew Traboulsi, and Perla Atweh; Ronald Sandoval; and Carlos Biaggi, MEU President and Professor. Over the course of two days, the group contributed five peer-reviewed presentations that addressed pressing issues for organizations operating in Lebanon and the Middle East:

Dr. Zgheib analyzed gaps in Lebanese business curricula in light of the rapid adoption of blockchain technology. Abdalla assessed economic applications of artificial intelligence that can enhance the competitiveness of small businesses. Biaggi discussed the interplay between human dignity, sectarian structures, and customer trust in the Lebanese banking sector. Atweh and Traboulsi assessed how recent e-government initiatives are influencing startups and microenterprises, and adjusting administrative costs. Sandoval discussed factors linked to employee satisfaction and retention in humanitarian agencies.

Each paper combines empirical data with practical recommendations, reflecting MEU’s commitment to research that informs both teaching and practice. The paper on blockchain, for example, proposes a review of curricula that integrate modules on decentralized finance, while the paper on AI maps low-cost tools suitable for companies with limited capital. Collectively, the papers directly address several subthemes highlighted by the conference organizers—artificial intelligence, digital currencies, emerging technologies, and community development—highlighting MEU’s regional perspective on global debates.

By presenting empirical findings, MEU reinforces its commitment to applied research and to training managers capable of responding to changing economic scenarios. In addition, participation in the conference strengthens collaboration between MEU and the various business schools that participated in the event and provides opportunities for joint research projects and different types of partnerships that further enrich our scientific programs.
